First edition of Vol. I and II of this collection of biographical portraits; from the library of William Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, bound in contemporary three quarter calf with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments withing raised bands, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. General William Tecumseh Sherman and his son P.T. Sherman’s bookplates to the front pastedown of both volumes. In very good condition. This set was inherited by P.T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the books were held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine was a French author, poet, and statesman who was instrumental in the foundation of the French Second Republic and the continuation of the tricolore as the flag of France. De Lamartine found instant fame with his second ever publication, 'Les Méditations Poétiques,' which included his dazzling autobiographical poem, 'Le lac' ['The Lake'], describing the fervent love shared by a couple from the retrospective point of view of the bereaved man. During his term as a politician in the Second Republic, he led efforts that culminated in the abolition of slavery and the death penalty, as well as the enshrinement of the right to work and the short-lived national workshop programs
