Paul Hogarth was a British illustrator and reportage artist known for his expressive, documentary-style drawings that brought a dynamic visual realism to literary works by authors such as Graham Greene, George Orwell, and Brendan Behan.
Siegfried Sassoon (1886–1967) was a British poet, novelist, and soldier whose work profoundly shaped the literary response to World War I through its unflinching portrayal of the psychological and moral toll of modern warfare. Initially known for his idealistic early poetry, Sassoon gained prominence with his searing anti-war verse written from the trenches, marked by irony, stark realism, and a deep sense of disillusionment. His later prose, particularly the semi-autobiographical Sherston trilogy—Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man (1928), Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930), and Sherston’s Progress (1936)—further explores the transition from youthful innocence to wartime trauma. A key figure among the war poets, alongside Wilfred Owen and Robert Graves, Sassoon is recognized not only for his literary contributions but also for his outspoken protest against the war, which challenged both military authorities and prevailing patriotic sentiment.
