On October 29, 1996, at a press luncheon held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, built on the site of the old Commodore Hotel where the NBA's original charter had been signed in 1946, Commissioner David Stern announced the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, a list compiled through voting by a blue-ribbon panel of media members, former players and coaches, and current and former general managers. The celebration culminated during All-Star weekend at Gund Arena in Cleveland, where virtually all of the honored players assembled on the court together in one of the most moving ceremonies in the league's history, a gathering made all the more extraordinary by the fact that eleven of the fifty honorees, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, and Scottie Pippen, were still active players in the very season being celebrated. At the time of the announcement, the fifty players had collectively accumulated 107 NBA championships, 49 Most Valuable Player Awards, 447 All-Star Game selections, and 923,791 total points, a statistical monument to the half century of athletic achievement the season was designed to honor.
