The Watergate scandal (1972–1974), a major political crisis that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, centered on the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and the subsequent cover-up by members of the Nixon administration. A pivotal moment in the unraveling of the conspiracy came with the actions of James W. McCord Jr., a former CIA officer and one of the convicted Watergate burglars. In March 1973, McCord wrote a letter to Judge John Sirica alleging that senior officials, including former Attorney General John Mitchell, had authorized the break-in, and that perjury had been committed during the trial. He further claimed that the defendants had been pressured to remain silent, thereby exposing the broader scope of the cover-up. McCord’s letter significantly intensified the investigation and contributed to the eventual exposure of high-level involvement in the scandal.
