First Editions of Rosalyn Drexler's I Am the Beautiful Stranger, The Line of Least Existence, and To Smithereens; with To Smithereens inscribed by her to American sportswriter Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman
First editions of this collection of works from the Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and professional wrestler. Octavo, three volumes, original publisher's cloth and half-cloth. To Smithereens is a presentation copy, inscribed by the author to American football sportswriter Paul Zimmerman, "To Paul, in admiration, Rosalyn Drexler." The recipient, Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman (1932–2018), was a pioneering American sportswriter whose analytical rigor and literary craftsmanship transformed the field of football journalism. Best known for his long tenure at Sports Illustrated, Zimmerman brought an unprecedented level of tactical insight to sports writing, grounding his commentary in detailed observation of line play, coaching strategy, and player technique. His work combined the precision of a game analyst with the critical sensibility of a cultural commentator, helping to legitimize sports journalism as a serious form of intellectual inquiry. Each volume is from Zimmerman's private collection with his characteristically tiny pencil notations to the rear free endpaper of I Am the Beautiful Stranger. Each volume is near fine in a very good to near fine dust jacket.
Rosalyn Drexler (1926-2025) is an American multidisciplinary artist, novelist, playwright, and former professional wrestler who occupies a unique place in postwar art and culture. As one of the few women associated with the Pop Art movement, she distinguished herself through works that recontextualized mass-media imagery to critique gender, celebrity, and consumerism. Her diverse career included a period as a professional wrestler—an experience later immortalized in Andy Warhol’s Album of a Mat Queen—which informed her recurring exploration of performance, physicality, and identity. A recipient of multiple Obie Awards for her Off-Broadway plays and an Emmy Award for her television writing, Drexler’s recognition across artistic disciplines underscores her range and innovation.
