First Edition of Humbert Wolfe's Humoresque; With the Ownership Signature of the Young Ian Fleming
First edition, third impression of this collection of poetry showcasing Humbert Wolfe's characteristic blend of wit, elegance, and reflective irony, from the library of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Octavo, original publisher's black cloth with paper titles to the spine. Ownership signature of the 17-18-year-old Ian Fleming dated 1926, giving a tantalizing insight into his literary tastes as a teenager. In fine condition. Housed in a custom black cloth clamshell box with gilt ruling and gilt titles to the spine and front panel. Rare and desirable.
Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was a British novelist and former naval intelligence officer whose James Bond books helped define Cold War spy fiction and reshaped popular conceptions of modern espionage. Beginning with Casino Royale (1953), Fleming wrote twelve Bond novels and two short-story collections, blending geopolitical anxiety with consumer modernity, exotic settings, and tightly engineered suspense. His work became the basis for one of cinema’s most enduring franchises, launched with Dr. No (1962) and continuing through numerous screen reinterpretations that draw on Fleming’s characters, plots, and titles. Although Fleming himself is not chiefly known for major literary prizes during his lifetime, his legacy is institutionalized through the Crime Writers’ Association Ian Fleming Steel Dagger, an annual award for thriller writing sponsored by Ian Fleming Publications.
