First Edition of Hammett; signed by Joe Gores
First edition of this cult classic detective novel. Octavo, original publisher's cloth. Boldly signed by Joe Gores on the title page beneath his name. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Honi Werner.
Joe Gores was an American crime writer and former private investigator whose work is distinguished by its realism, sharp dialogue, and homage to the hardboiled tradition. Drawing on his own experience in detective work, Gores brought a high degree of authenticity to his fiction, most notably in his novels featuring the Daniel Kearny Associates, a team of repo men navigating the criminal underworld. 'Hammett' is a metafictional detective novel that blends historical fact with literary invention, casting the real-life author Dashiell Hammett as the protagonist in a fictional mystery. The novel imagines Hammett, now a retired Pinkerton operative turned writer, being drawn back into an investigation that mirrors the hardboiled narratives he would later popularize. In 1982, it was adapted into a stylized neo-noir film directed by Wim Wenders and produced by Francis Ford Coppola.
