“Gravity's Rainbow is one of the few truly great novels of the century, and at the same time one of the most disappointing, disturbing, maddening…. One of the most original fictive styles to have been developed since Joyce” (Contemporary Novelists, 1136). It is regarded by many scholars as the greatest American novel published after the end of the second world war, and is "often considered as the postmodern novel, redefining both postmodernism and the novel in general" (Pohllman). Time named it one of its "All-Time 100 Greatest Novels", a list of the best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.
