Rare Remington Model 1871 Rolling Block Target Pistol; From the Collection of General William T. Sherman
Rare Remington rolling block target pistol from the collection of General William T. Sherman preserved in his military trunk. Remington altered model 1871 with a 10 inch round barrel, approximately 32 caliber, and buckhorn sight. The pistol possibly dates from Sherman's time in Egypt when he was commissioned by Khedive Isma'il Pasha to reorganize and modernize the Egyptian military. In very good condition. The piece measures 14.5 inches.
In 1872, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Egypt as part of a broader diplomatic and military observation tour. During his time there, he met with Khedive Isma'il Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, who was undertaking extensive modernization efforts, particularly in the military and infrastructure. Sherman observed the Egyptian army, which was being reorganized with European influences, and provided insights based on his own military experience. His visit reflected the growing global interactions of the United States in the post-Civil War era and highlighted Egypt’s strategic importance in international affairs. Although Sherman was impressed with some aspects of the Khedive’s modernization efforts, Egypt’s increasing reliance on foreign advisors and debt would later contribute to Isma'il Pasha’s downfall in 1879.
