Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ (1995) is the landmark work by psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman (b. 1946) that brought the concept of emotional intelligence to a worldwide audience. A longtime writer on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times, Goleman drew on the research of psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer, who had coined the term "emotional intelligence," together with emerging neuroscience, to argue that qualities such as self-awareness, self-discipline, empathy, and the ability to manage one's emotions can matter as much as or more than IQ in determining success in life, work, and relationships. The book spent more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list, has been translated into some forty languages, and reshaped popular and professional thinking about education, leadership, and the workplace, making "EQ" a part of everyday vocabulary. Goleman, who has long studied meditation and the dialogue between modern psychology and the world's contemplative traditions, went on to write a series of influential books extending his ideas, among them Working with Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence.
