Frank Herbert (1920-1986) wove together ecology, religion, politics, and questions of power and destiny into an epic of extraordinary depth, and the novel became the first ever to win both the Nebula Award, in 1965, and the Hugo Award, in 1966. It founded a saga that Herbert continued through five sequels and that has sold tens of millions of copies around the world, inspiring David Lynch’s 1984 film and the acclaimed two-part adaptation by Denis Villeneuve released in 2021 and 2024.
