The Doolittle Raiders were a group of United States Army Air Forces personnel who carried out the Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, the first American air attack on the Japanese home islands during World War II. Led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, the mission involved launching sixteen B-25 bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to strike targets in Tokyo and other cities, demonstrating American resolve following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the raid caused limited physical damage, it had significant psychological and strategic impact, boosting American morale and prompting Japan to alter its defensive posture.
