First limited edition of this classic adventure novel. Octavo, original publisher’s half-cloth with paper spine label, top edge gilt, tissue-guarded frontispiece of the author, illustrated throughout. Association copy, inscribed by P.C. Wren on his personal bookplate, “To Ronald Colman Esq with the author’s homage. P.C. Wren.” In the 1926 silent film of the same name, Ronald Colman starred as Michael “Beau” Geste, the novel’s central character. Colman’s performance, marked by his signature blend of stoic dignity and emotional depth, helped establish him as a major star of the silent and early sound eras and contributed significantly to the film’s success and lasting legacy. Additionally signed by the author on the limitations page. One of 1,000 numbered copies, this is number 180. In very good condition with damp-staining to the foot of the spine and a small lose to the paper spine label. Illustrated by Helen McKie. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. Accompanied by an autograph letter signed by Isabel Wren, P.C. Wren’s second wife and model for the heroine of Beau Geste, asking Colman to send an autographed portrait; along with a typed and signed letter from Wren to Colman thanking him for sending the autographed portrait his wife had requested. Both laid in.

Beau Geste (1924) by P.C. Wren is a classic adventure novel that blends themes of honor, sacrifice, and imperial duty within the exoticized setting of the French Foreign Legion. Centered on the three Geste brothers, particularly the noble and enigmatic Michael “Beau” Geste, the novel explores questions of loyalty and moral code against the backdrop of colonial North Africa. Written in the wake of World War I, the book reflects contemporary anxieties about heroism and decline, casting the Legion as both a crucible of masculinity and a romantic escape from conventional society. Its narrative structure—featuring flashbacks, mystery, and shifting points of view—enhances its suspense and psychological depth. Beau Geste has been adapted into multiple films, radio series, and television series.
