First Edition of P.D. Eastman’s Beloved Classic Are You My Mother?
First edition, early printing of P.D. Eastman’s beloved classic, one of the most cherished titles in Random House’s Beginner Books series. Octavo, original pictorial boards, illustrated by the author throughout. Early printing with 195/195 price code on jacket flap and only 24 titles listed on jacket rear. In very good condition with some toning and a few small chips and short tears to the extremities of the dust jacket. An appealing example of this enduring classic.
Philip Dey Eastman began his career as an animator and storyman for Walt Disney Productions and Warner Bros. before serving alongside Theodor Geisel in the Signal Corps film unit during the Second World War, a collaboration that would shape American children’s literature. When Geisel founded Beginner Books at Random House following the success of The Cat in the Hat, Eastman became one of the imprint’s most celebrated author-illustrators. Are You My Mother?, the tale of a hatchling bird who sets out to find his mother and questions a kitten, a hen, a dog, a cow and even a steam shovel along the way, was published in 1960 with a vocabulary of only 100 words. It has remained continuously in print ever since and ranks among the best-selling children’s books of all time.
