Johannes Kepler’s Ad Epistolam Sethi Calvisii Chronologi Responsio (Frankfurt, 1614) is a polemical treatise in which the astronomer responds to criticisms from the chronologist Sethus Calvisius, who had accused Kepler of distorting the meaning of certain Gospel passages in the course of his astronomical and chronological investigations. Written at a moment when the boundaries between biblical interpretation and emerging scientific knowledge were hotly contested, Kepler’s reply seeks not only to defend his hermeneutic methods but also to demonstrate the intellectual rigor with which astronomy could coexist with, and even illuminate, scriptural history.
