Published in 1950 when Shute had newly settled in Australia, A Town Like Alice follows the story of Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman who becomes romantically involved with a fellow prisoner of World War II in Malaya, and after liberation emigrates to Australia to invest her inheritance in a small outback community. The novel was adapted into the film of the same name in 1956 starring Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch.
