The America’s Cup, first contested in 1851 when the schooner America defeated a fleet of British yachts off the Isle of Wight, remains the oldest international trophy in sport and one of its most technically innovative competitions. For 132 years the Cup was held continuously by the New York Yacht Club, an unparalleled streak in modern athletics that ended only in 1983 when Australia II, featuring a revolutionary winged keel, defeated the American defender. Since then, the event has reflected shifts in maritime technology and global competition, with dominant campaigns by teams from New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United States, each advancing yacht design through lighter materials, hydrofoiling systems, and increasingly aerodynamic rigs.
