First edition of A King's Story, King Edward's classic autobiography. Octavo, original publisher's cloth with coat of arms stamped in gilt to the front panel, top stain red, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece, illustrated with black and white photographs. Inscribed note by the Duke of Windsor on his official monogrammed stationary laid in, "To Harry Evans with best wishes from Edward." Very good in a good dust jacket with a slight lean to the text block, and chipping to the dust jacket with losses to the flap hinges. Together with a first edition of The Heart Has Its Reasons, the autobiography of Wallis Simpson. Octavo, original publisher's half-cloth, top stain green, illustrated with 32 pages of black and white photographs. Signed by the Duchess of Windsor on the half-title page, "With love and admiration from Wallis." Near fine in a good dust jacket with chipping, creasing, losses to the spine, and tape repairs to the verso. Desirable.
King Edward VIII (1894–1972) and Wallis Simpson (1896–1986), later the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, occupy a distinctive place in twentieth-century British constitutional and social history. Edward’s decision in 1936 to abdicate the throne in order to marry Simpson, an American divorcée, precipitated a constitutional crisis that underscored tensions between personal autonomy, monarchical duty, and the political expectations of the British government and Commonwealth. Following the abdication, Edward was created Duke of Windsor, and the couple spent much of their lives abroad, notably during his tenure as Governor of the Bahamas (1940–1945).
