First edition of this funny, lusty, and sad novel of comic genius. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author to his publisher Seymour Lawrence in the year of publication, “Century Club (where the action is) August 14, 1973 To Seymour Lawrence J.P. Donleavy.” Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing to the spine extremities. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. A nice association.
J.P. Donleavy and Seymour Lawrence first met in 1961, and had been corresponding regarding Donleavy’s work in progress A Fairy Tale of New York. Donleavy gave Lawrence The Ginger Man to publish, which, in association with Delacorte/Dell, came out in 1965 (the first complete and unexpurgated edition published in the U.S.) to great success. Lawrence built a remarkable list of important authors, including: Thomas Berger, Richard Brautigan, Kurt Vonnegut, William Styron, Jim Harrison, William Saroyan, Frank Conroy and several Nobel Laureates.
