Jean Shepherd was a humorist, radio raconteur, and writer whose nostalgic, exaggerated tales of a boyhood in northern Indiana made him a cult favorite. Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters (1971) collects stories first published in Playboy, following his fictional alter ego Ralph Parker through the miseries and glories of adolescence, from proms and county fairs to summer jobs. Shepherd is best remembered today as the narrator and co-writer of the perennial holiday film A Christmas Story (1983), which drew on characters and episodes from his stories, and this collection remains one of the fullest gatherings of the comic Americana that inspired it.
