100,000 Hearts is the memoir of Denton A. Cooley, one of the most celebrated heart surgeons in history, whose career spanned the birth and flowering of modern cardiac surgery. Cooley performed the first successful human heart transplant in the United States in 1968 and, the following year, became the first to implant a total artificial heart in a human patient, a landmark and controversial operation that kept a dying man alive until a donor heart could be found. Founder of the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, he and his teams performed more than a hundred thousand open-heart operations, the figure that gives the book its title. Renowned for his extraordinary speed and skill in the operating room, Cooley was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Technology, and he remained a towering figure in American medicine until his death in 2016.
