Denton A. Cooley was one of the most celebrated heart surgeons in history. He performed the first successful human heart transplant in the United States in 1968 and, the following year, became the first to implant a total artificial heart in a human patient. Founder of the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, he and his teams performed more than a hundred thousand open-heart operations over the course of his career. This photograph records President Bill Clinton awarding Cooley the National Medal of Technology in 1998, one of the nation's highest honors for technological achievement, in recognition of his pioneering work in cardiac surgery. Cooley also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and remained a towering figure in American medicine until his death in 2016.
