A Collection of Four First Edition Works by John Kenneth Galbraith on Money, Power, and Economic Systems; Each Inscribed by Him
A collection of four first edition works by John Kenneth Galbraith on money, power, and the rival economic systems of the modern age. Octavo, four volumes, original publisher's cloth or half-cloth. The collection comprises Money: Whence It Came, Where It Went (Houghton Mifflin, 1975), his history of money and its mysteries; The Anatomy of Power (Houghton Mifflin, 1983), his analysis of how power is won and wielded; A View from the Stands (Houghton Mifflin, 1986), his essays on people, politics, military power, and the arts; and Capitalism, Communism and Coexistence (Houghton Mifflin, 1988), written with the Soviet economist Stanislav Menshikov on the future of the two great systems. Each volume is a presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Jane O’Riley, who divided her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts and Vermont, the two places Galbraith himself called home. Each volume is fine to near fine in a fine to near fine dust jacket with paperclip marks to the front free endpapers of two volumes. A rich grouping of Galbraith on the machinery of the modern world.
John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) was one of the most influential economists and public intellectuals of the twentieth century, a leading proponent of American liberalism and a master of lucid, witty prose. A Harvard professor for decades, he advised presidents from Roosevelt to Kennedy, served as United States Ambassador to India, and reached a vast general readership through best-selling works such as The Affluent Society and The New Industrial State. Across more than four dozen books he championed the role of government in a humane economy and skewered what he famously called the conventional wisdom, becoming the rare economist whose name was known in every household.
