A Collection of Three First Edition Works by John Kenneth Galbraith on Economics and Its History; Each Inscribed by Him
A collection of three first edition works by John Kenneth Galbraith exploring the great sweep of economic history and ideas, including his celebrated venture into fiction. Octavo, three volumes, original publisher's original publisher's cloth or half-cloth. The collection comprises: The Age of Uncertainty (Houghton Mifflin, 1977), his acclaimed history of economic thought and its makers; A Journey Through Economic Time (Houghton Mifflin, 1994), his firsthand account of the defining economic events of the century; and A Tenured Professor (Houghton Mifflin, 1990), his witty satirical novel of a Harvard economist who cracks the secret of the stock market. Each volume is a presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Jane O’Riley, who divided her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts and Vermont, the two places Galbraith himself called home. Each volume is fine in very good to fine dust jackets. A wonderful grouping of Galbraith at his most expansive.
John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) was one of the most influential economists and public intellectuals of the twentieth century, a leading proponent of American liberalism and a master of lucid, witty prose. A Harvard professor for decades, he advised presidents from Roosevelt to Kennedy, served as United States Ambassador to India, and reached a vast general readership through best-selling works such as The Affluent Society and The New Industrial State. Across more than four dozen books he championed the role of government in a humane economy and skewered what he famously called the conventional wisdom, becoming the rare economist whose name was known in every household.
