Yuri Gagarin (1934–1968) was a Soviet cosmonaut whose flight aboard Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961 marked the first time a human entered orbital space, completing one orbit of Earth in a mission lasting 108 minutes. The achievement carried significance beyond engineering, functioning as a highly visible demonstration of Soviet technological capacity during the Cold War and helping to define spaceflight as a domain of ideological competition as well as scientific ambition. Notably, Vostok 1’s descent was largely automated, and Gagarin landed by parachute after ejecting from the capsule, underscoring both the experimental character and calculated risk of early human spaceflight. In the years that followed, Gagarin became an international symbol of Soviet modernity, although his career was cut short when he died in a MiG-15UTI training crash on 27 March 1968.
