Rare United States Army Signal Corps photograph of President Woodrow Wilson and President Raymond Poincaré of France taken in Paris during the peace negotiations that ended the First World War, signed by both. The half-length portrait, with the stamp of the United States Army Signal Corps at lower left, shows the two leaders seated together in a carriage in December 1918, during Wilson’s triumphant visit to Paris for the Versailles negotiations, and is signed by each in the blank lower margin. In uncommonly fine condition, mounted to a board trimmed to size. The photograph measures 14.25 inches by 10 inches. Triple matted and archivally framed. The entire piece measures 20.25 inches by 17 inches. A remarkable image uniting the American and French presidents at the dawn of the postwar order.
In December 1918, weeks after the armistice that ended the First World War, Woodrow Wilson became the first sitting American president to travel to Europe, sailing to France to take part in the peace conference at Versailles. He was greeted in Paris by ecstatic crowds and by the French president, Raymond Poincare, as the champion of his Fourteen Points and of a new League of Nations to prevent future wars. Wilson’s idealism would shape the Treaty of Versailles signed the following June, though the United States Senate would ultimately refuse to ratify it or to join the League. This photograph captures the two heads of state at that hopeful moment, when Wilson was hailed across Europe as the architect of a lasting peace.
