William Randolph Hearst was an American newspaper magnate who built the nation's largest newspaper chain and whose methods profoundly influenced American journalism during the Great Depression and beyond. He later expanded into magazines, creating the largest newspaper and magazine business in the world. His flamboyant brand of yellow journalism helped shape modern mass media, and his life and career famously inspired Orson Welles's film Citizen Kane. Hearst's grand California estate at San Simeon, known as Hearst Castle, became a legendary gathering place for the political and Hollywood elite of his day.
