We Are the Living is a collection of Erskine Caldwell's early short stories, several of which first appeared in magazines such as Esquire, Story, and The Yale Review. One of the best selling and most controversial American writers of the twentieth century, Caldwell won enormous popular success and frequent censorship for his unflinching depictions of poverty, sexuality, and injustice in the rural South. He is best remembered for the novels Tobacco Road, which became a long-running Broadway play, and God's Little Acre, published the same year as this collection, which sold millions of copies and became the subject of a famous obscenity trial. His spare, earthy realism made him one of the defining voices of Depression-era American fiction.
