An exhibition invitation signed by two of the most important American artists of the postwar era, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. Issued for the opening of In + Out City Limits, an exhibition of Rauschenberg's photographs of New York held at the Sonnabend Gallery from January 9 to 30, 1982. Small octavo, a folded sheet forming four pages, the first page reproducing one of Rauschenberg's New York City photographs. Signed by Robert Rauschenberg in light blue ink across his own printed signature on the first page, and boldly signed by Andy Warhol vertically on the terminal page. In very good condition.
Andy Warhol was the leading figure of the American Pop Art movement, whose work transformed the relationship between art, consumer culture, and celebrity. Drawing on the imagery of advertising and mass media, most famously in his Campbell's Soup Cans and Marilyn Diptych, he blurred the line between high art and commercial design and made mechanical reproduction central to his silkscreen practice. Robert Rauschenberg was one of the most inventive and influential artists of his generation, a pivotal bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Famous for his Combines, which fused painting with found objects, he worked restlessly across painting, printmaking, photography, and performance. His In + Out City Limits project gathered photographs he made of New York and other American cities, and the two artists were friends and contemporaries at the heart of the New York art world.
