Rare Photograph of Walt Whitman Signed and Dated by the Poet; the Frontispiece Portrait to Two Rivulets
Sepia photograph of the great American poet Walt Whitman, signed and dated by him. Half-length portrait by G. Frank E. Pearsall, showing Whitman seated at a writing table in three-quarter view, looking reflective. Boldly signed and dated by Whitman within the image at the lower right, "Walt Whitman 1881." This is the portrait Whitman chose as the frontispiece to his Two Rivulets of 1876. The photograph measures 5.75 by 4 inches, mounted to a larger board, with a minor crease at the lower left. Handsomely matted and framed. The photograph measures 5.75 inches by 4.25 inches. The entire piece measures 11.75 inches by 10.25 inches. An exceptional piece.
Walt Whitman (1819-1892), author of Leaves of Grass, is widely regarded as the father of modern American poetry and one of the most influential writers his country has produced. This portrait was made in September 1872 by G. Frank E. Pearsall at his Brooklyn studio at 298 Fulton Street, among the largest photographic studios in the city at the time, and Whitman selected the image to serve as the frontispiece to Two Rivulets, the companion volume to Leaves of Grass that he issued in 1876 as part of the Centennial Edition of his writings. Whitman took an unusually active interest in his own photographic image, sitting for many of the leading photographers of his day and using their portraits to shape his enduring public persona as the poet of American democracy.
