Troja, published in 1884, records Heinrich Schliemann’s final campaign of excavation at Hisarlik in northwestern Anatolia, the great mound he had identified as the site of Homer’s Troy. Building on his earlier and sensational digs there and aided by the young architect Wilhelm Dörpfeld, Schliemann refined his understanding of the successive cities buried in the mound and mounted a fresh defense of its identification with the Troy of the Iliad. Schliemann (1822-1890), a German businessman who turned his fortune to the pursuit of Homer’s world, was among the founders of modern archaeology, and although his methods and some of his claims have since been questioned, his discoveries at Troy and Mycenae opened the prehistoric Aegean to scholarship. The volume carries a preface by the Oxford philologist Archibald Henry Sayce and is illustrated with 150 woodcuts and maps of the Troad.
