Captain John Smith (1580 to 1631) was the English soldier, explorer, and author whose leadership helped the Jamestown colony survive its first desperate years, and whose writings are among the earliest and most important English accounts of North America. This edition gathers his collected works, including The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles, in which Smith set down the story of the founding of Virginia in 1607, the roll of the original planters and the first supply, and his own celebrated account of his capture by the Powhatan and his rescue by the young Pocahontas, the tale that would become one of the enduring legends of American origins. A veteran of the wars against the Ottoman Turks in Hungary before he ever reached America, Smith mapped the Chesapeake and later the coast of the region he named New England.
