"I made every effort to keep my footing against the undertow of doubt": First edition of Will Durant's Transition: A Sentimental Story of One Mind and One Era; inscribed by him
Early printing of Durant's classic work on the Great Change. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Good wishes from Will Durant." In very good condition.
In his foreword to Transition, Durant states: "Perhaps this is your story as well as John Lemaire's. It tries to show the effect, upon one growing mind, of the profound transformation which modern science and research have brought in the faith of the western world. In a lesser way it tries also to show the political experiments and disillusionment of our time, and to trace the evolution of a fairly typical rebel from Utopian aspiration through a cynical despondency to some measure of reconciliation and good cheer. These changes have not been as impersonal as the abstract chronicle of history represents them... It is with this personal aspect of the Great Change that the story is concerned."
