The Transactions of the Linnean Society of London was one of the most important and influential scientific journals of its time, particularly in the fields of natural history and taxonomy. Published by the prestigious Linnean Society of London, founded in 1788, it served as a primary platform for groundbreaking scientific work during the late 18th and 19th centuries. First issued in 1791, the journal gained international prominence for publishing major contributions to biological science, most notably the 1858 joint paper by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace that introduced the revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection. As a respected forum for scholarly communication, it attracted many of the era’s leading naturalists and helped shape the development of modern biology. Over time, the Transactions gave rise to specialized offshoots such as the Biological, Botanical, and Zoological Journals of the Linnean Society, reflecting its enduring legacy and influence on the scientific community.
