Toad of Toad Hall is A. A. Milne's dramatization of The Wind in the Willows, the 1908 children's classic by his friend Kenneth Grahame, whom Milne revered. First published and produced in 1929, the play distills Grahame's episodic idyll of the riverbank into a stage comedy centered on the irrepressible, motor-mad Mr. Toad, with Ratty, Mole, and Badger in support, and it has been revived at Christmas by British theaters for the better part of a century. In his introduction Milne, ever protective of Grahame's masterpiece, confessed that he had left the book's most beautiful chapters untouched rather than risk disfiguring them for the stage. Alan Alexander Milne was already among the most successful playwrights and humorists of his day, and in the same decade he created the enduring characters of Winnie-the-Pooh, drawn from the toys of his young son Christopher Robin, which would eclipse all his other work and make him one of the best-loved authors in the English language.
