Through Hell and Deep Water by Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood and Hans Christian Adamson offers a gripping narrative of six perilous submarine patrols carried out by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Based on official reports and personal accounts of the Navy's deadly submarine the U.S.S. Harder under the command of Sam Dealey, the book captures the intensity of undersea combat and the psychological and physical toll on the crews involved. These six missions, selected for their exceptional daring and strategic impact, illustrate the vital role of submarines in the Pacific Theater. The crews featured in the book received numerous honors for their bravery, including Navy Crosses, Silver Stars, and Presidential Unit Citations. Combining Lockwood’s operational authority with Adamson’s storytelling, the work not only documents the technical and tactical aspects of submarine warfare but also commemorates the valor and sacrifice of those who served beneath the waves.
