The Year of Magical Thinking (2005) is Joan Didion's searing account of the year following the sudden death of her husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, as their daughter Quintana lay gravely ill. With unflinching honesty and her characteristic precision, Didion anatomizes grief and the irrational magical thinking by which the bereaved try to undo the unbearable. A landmark of American memoir, it won the 2005 National Book Award for Nonfiction and was a finalist for both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize. In 2007 it was adapted for Broadway by David Hare as a one-woman play starring Vanessa Redgrave.
