Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022) in Três Corações, Brazil, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in the history of the sport and among its first truly global icons. Emerging as a teenage prodigy at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, he helped establish Brazil as a dominant force in international football, and he remains the only player to have won three World Cup titles, in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Known in Brazil as "O Rei" (The King) and celebrated for his dribbling, vision, and prolific scoring, he spent the bulk of his club career with Santos before joining the New York Cosmos in 1975, a move that significantly raised the profile of the sport in the United States. He remains Brazil's joint all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches and is credited with well over 1,000 career goals across club and country. Beyond his athletic achievements, Pelé became a cultural and diplomatic figure - serving as a UNESCO ambassador and Brazilian minister for sport, and lending his name to films, autobiographies, and other ventures - such that his significance extends beyond competitive results into the broader history of sport as a vehicle of national identity and global cultural exchange. In 1999 he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee, and his death in São Paulo in 2022 prompted an international outpouring of tribute befitting a figure who had become synonymous with the game itself.
