Octavo, original flexible black cloth lettered in gilt. One of 1000 numbered copies of the first edition, this is number 560.This first book edition was the first appearance of the poem with Eliot’s celebrated explanatory notes. In very good condition, with light color to the spine.
The Waste Land, published in 1922, is the most famous and influential poem of the twentieth century and the central monument of literary modernism. A fragmented, allusive meditation on a civilization shattered by the First World War, its lines move through a ruined landscape of myth, memory, and desolation, drawing on sources from the Grail legend and Dante to Hindu scripture, and closing on the Sanskrit benediction “Shantih shantih shantih.” Heavily cut and reshaped by Ezra Pound, whom Eliot would later hail as “il miglior fabbro,” the poem first appeared in the magazines The Criterion and The Dial in 1922 before this first book edition, published by Boni and Liveright in an edition of one thousand copies, which added Eliot’s notes. T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) was awarded the Dial Award for the poem and, in 1948, the Nobel Prize in Literature, and The Waste Land remains a touchstone of modern poetry.
