Eugene Sue was one of several authors that popularized the genre of the serial novel in France; his 'The Mysteries of Paris' and 'The Wandering Jew' were widely popular if controversial for their strong socialist and anti-clerical subtexts. In 'The Wandering Jew,' two siblings, one a princess of the Herodian dynasty of Judea and the other a personification of cholera, are condemned to roam the earth and protect the Rennepont family, Huguenots persecuted by the Jesuits, until all of the family have disappeared.
