James A. Williamson (1886–1964) was a British historian and maritime scholar renowned for his authoritative studies on the Age of Discovery and the early phases of English overseas expansion. Educated at Oxford, Williamson specialized in archival research on late medieval and early modern navigation. 'The Voyages of the Cabots' is a scholarly examination of England’s earliest recorded ventures into the New World, focusing on the expeditions of John and Sebastian Cabot. Drawing extensively on primary sources such as royal patents, diplomatic correspondence, and contemporary cartographic evidence, Williamson reconstructs the geopolitical and economic contexts that shaped England’s late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century maritime ambitions. The work situates the Cabots’ voyages within the broader framework of Tudor foreign policy, emphasizing their role in laying the groundwork for England’s later imperial expansion.
