First Edition of Muriel Spark's The Very Fine Clock
First British edition of this charming children’s tale by the celebrated novelist Muriel Spark. Oblong octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout by Edward Gorey. Fine in a near fine dust jacket.
The Very Fine Clock (1968) is a whimsical children’s story by the Scottish novelist Muriel Spark (1918-2006), best known for her masterpiece The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It tells of Ticky, a fine mantel clock so wise and well-regarded that he comes to instruct the professor who owns him along with the other clocks and objects of the household. The book is illustrated with the unmistakable pen-and-ink drawings of Edward Gorey (1925-2000), the American artist and writer celebrated for his darkly comic, cross-hatched illustrations and his own macabre little books.
