The Sword of Wood.

The Sword of Wood (1928) is a delightful short story by Gilbert Keith Chesterton, the English writer, philosopher, lay theologian, and literary critic whom his contemporaries called the Prince of Paradox, and whose prodigious output encompassed a hundred books, five novels, two hundred short stories, and over four thousand newspaper essays. The story is a neat, almost science-fictional squib about an enchanted sword which defeats all comers until at last overcome by a hero's walking stick, the revelation being that the sword was magnetized, a characteristically Chestertonian device in which a seemingly supernatural mystery is resolved by a perfectly rational but wholly unexpected natural explanation. Set in the sleepy Somerset village of Grayling-Abbot, where the medieval and the modern coexist in uneasy tension, the story weaves together themes of chivalry, rationalism, and the enduring human appetite for myth and enchantment in a narrative that, though slight in length, displays the wit, paradox, and philosophical playfulness that distinguished Chesterton's fiction across its many forms.
