First American edition of one of James’ two unfinished novels, published posthumously. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine, in near fine condition.
Published a year after James' death, The Sense of the Past provides an eerie account of a young New Yorker who voyages to his ancestral home in London where he finds himself to have traveled into the past. Unfinished, the novel breaks off suddenly, James did, however leave extensive notes alluding to a dramatic plot twist at the story's end.
