Eric Carle has received many distinguished awards and honours for his work, including the 2003 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his lifetime contribution to children's literature and illustration. He also founded the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, a 44,000 sq ft museum devoted to the art of children's books in located in Amherst. The Secret Birthday Message marks the early point of Carle's influential career and was written a few years after The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
