Rare Summer 1958 Issue of The Paris Review; Containing an Interview with Henry Green and Short Stories From Philip Roth and V.S. Naipaul
The summer 1958 issue of The Paris Review, number 19, containing the first appearance of "The Art of Fiction XXII", an interview with Henry Green conducted by Terry Southern. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers, illustrated throughout. Henry Green (1905–1973), the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke, was an English novelist associated with the experimental currents of twentieth-century British fiction. In the interview, Green reflects on his unconventional prose, his interest in dialogue-driven storytelling, and his belief that fiction should capture the rhythms and ambiguities of everyday speech rather than adhere to strict narrative conventions. Discussing works such as Living, Party Going, and Loving, Green emphasizes the importance of suggestion, omission, and atmosphere in shaping a reader’s experience. The magazine also contains poetry, drawings, an essay, and short stories by Philip Roth and V.S. Naipaul. In near fine condition.
The Paris Review is a prominent American literary magazine founded in 1953 by George Plimpton, Peter Matthiessen, Harold L. Humes, and others, with the aim of emphasizing creative work and serious discussion of literary craft. Published quarterly, the journal quickly became known for its commitment to fiction, poetry, and essays by both emerging and established writers, as well as for its influential interview series, “The Art of Fiction,” which features extended conversations with major authors about their writing practices and literary philosophy. Over the decades, The Paris Review has played a significant role in shaping contemporary literary culture, publishing early work by many important writers and fostering dialogue about the art and technique of modern literature.
