Limited edition of the collected paintings of Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, one of Britain’s foremost commanders of the Second World War and a gifted amateur landscape painter, with an introduction by his friend the celebrated painter Edward Seago. Oblong quarto, original publisher's green half morocco over cloth boards, the spine lettered in gilt, illustrated with color plates reproducing Alexander’s paintings of Canada, Portugal and the Mediterranean, and the Thames Valley. In very good condition, housed in the original cloth slipcase.
Field Marshal Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis (1891-1969), was one of the most distinguished British commanders of the Second World War, leading Allied forces in the retreat from Burma, in the North African campaign that gave him his title, and through the long Italian campaign as Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean, before serving as Governor General of Canada and as Minister of Defence. Throughout his life he was also a gifted amateur landscape painter, encouraged in the art by his friend the celebrated English painter Edward Seago, who contributes the introduction to this volume. Published posthumously in 1973 by the trustees of his estate, the book gathers reproductions of Alexander’s paintings of Canada, Portugal and the Mediterranean, and the Thames Valley, a serene counterpoint to the battlefields on which he made his name.
