A landmark series of scholarly volumes, The Oxford History of England provides a comprehensive narrative of English history from Roman Britain to the early twentieth century. First conceived and published by Oxford University Press beginning in 1934 under the general editorship of G. N. Clark, the series aimed to present an authoritative and accessible account of the nation’s political, social, economic, and cultural development. Written by leading historians of the time, including A. J. P. Taylor, Maurice Powicke, and R. G. Collingwood, the volumes were notable for their rigorous scholarship, literary clarity, and interpretive depth. While later historical methodologies have called into question some of the series' frameworks—particularly its Anglocentric and often Whiggish perspective—it remains an influential and widely referenced body of work.
