First edition of Helen Gardner's New Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1950. Octavo, bound in full crushed morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, triple gilt ruling and fleuron cornerpieces to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In near fine condition.
The Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900, chosen and edited by Arthur Quiller-Couch, appeared in 1900. It rapidly established itself as the classic anthology of English poetry, running through twenty-one impressions in the next forty years and selling nearly half a million copies. The present edition is a new anthology that widens the range of poetry initially included in Q's compilation in an attempt to represent the variety of English non-dramatic poetry from 1250 to 1900.
