The Lives of the Twelve Caesars by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus is a seminal work of Roman biography that offers vivid, often scandalous portraits of the first twelve rulers of the Roman Empire, from Julius Caesar to Domitian. Writing in the early second century CE, Suetonius combines historical narrative with personal anecdotes, focusing as much on the private vices and virtues of the emperors as on their public deeds. Philemon Holland’s English translation, produced in the early 17th century, helped make this classical text accessible to Renaissance readers, aligning with the period’s humanist interest in antiquity and moral exemplarity. Holland's robust and idiomatic style brought Suetonius’s Latin into the vernacular with clarity and liveliness, reinforcing the translator's reputation as a key figure in the transmission of classical knowledge to early modern England.
